3/1/2010 - Is Brian De Palma Directing Paranormal Activity 2?
Paramount is on an impossible mission (see what I did there? I referenced an old Commodore 64 game) to find a director worthy of helming a sequel to their blockbuster hit, Paranormal Activity. The original film from first-time director Oren Peli was produced for under a million dollars but went on to gross over a hundred million at the box-office. A profit that size made a sequel inevitable, and the studio has already announced a release date of October 22nd, 2010… less than eight months away. Full Article

3/1/2010 - Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku Teaming For Feature Film
Though their recently deceased TV series Dollhouse was not the ratings hit it perhaps should have been, definitely when you consider the heights it ultimately reached in creative terms, the signs are good for an imminent upcoming collaboration between geek god Joss Whedon and his buttock-whupper muse Eliza Dushku. 2/26/2010 - EXCLUSIVE: William Friedkin Says No to The Exorcist in 3D
With the success of Avatar, everything is now being filmed in 3D. Even films that weren't originally envisioned with this new technology in mind, like the upcoming Clash of the Titans and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, are now being converted before their official release date. This has a lot of directors returning to their older films with the idea of also converting them over to 3D. Full Article

Low-budget action king Roger Corman is making a B movie about a sea monster for Syfy. The news about the in-development Sharktopus — you guessed it, the title beast will be half-octopus, half-shark — broke when TV director Karen O’Hara tweeted that she’d just gotten off the phone with Corman: “Spent half am [sic] hour discussing what a sharktopus should look like, how many mouths it should have and how it should kill.” Full Article

2/13/2010 - Eli Roth To Produce Horror Faux Documentary 'The Last Exorcism'
Will audiences ever tire of the documentary-style horror film? The success of "Paranormal Activity" proved that ten years after "The Blair Witch Project," people are still into the format, which employs a false sense of authenticity that makes the events appear more real and seem more plausible -- and are therefore scarier. But no film can ever be more frightening than "The Exorcist," right? Well, how about a film that's like "The Exorcist" shot in the style of "Paranormal Activity"? Full Article

2/13/2010 - Exclusive: 'Shutter Island' creator Dennis Lehane on B-movie Horror
Novelist Dennis Lehane will be the first to admit he’s led a charmed life compared to most novelists, at least in terms of film adaptations of his work. His books Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone were turned into Academy Award-nominated films from directors Clint Eastwood and Ben Affleck (respectively). And his bestselling homage to b-movies and gothic and pulp novels, Shutter Island, is hitting theaters this month in a screen adaptation from no less a filmmaker than Martin Scorsese. I sat down with Lehane a few days ago to discuss the author’s love of genre and how he used it to craft one of the most unconventional thrillers in recent memory. Check out our conversation below. For quite some time David Twohy has been talking about doing another sequel to Pitch Black and for some time its been nothing more then promises and speculation. 2/11/2010 - Escape From New York… Again
I don’t know if horror writer/director icon John Carpenter should be flattered or upset because most of his classic cult films are being remade, some for the good (Assault on Precinct 13) and some for the bad (The Fog, Halloween). A look at his IMDB page shows a reference to a They Live remake due out in 2011 but there hasn’t been any news on that for a few months. A couple of days ago the news dropped that his cult classic Kurt Russell horror film The Thing was getting a prequel and now we find out that his other Russell movie Escape from New York is going to be remade.Full Article

Dread Central found this to be the perfect reason to catch up with writer/producer/director-turned-notable actor Eli Roth to reflect on the film that put him on the horror map and what he’s doing these days when he isn’t celebrating all the award season success of Inglourious Basterds, the highly acclaimed Quentin Tarantino flick that was released this past summer.Full Article

1/24/2010 - Irony of the Week: Saw VI: Director Kevin Greutert to Direct Paranormal Activity 2
So let me get this straight... Kevin Greutert more or less saves the Saw series by making one of the, if not the best installment in the long-running series and pulling the franchise out of a two-film artistic slump. But, the film more or less flops, taking in less overall ($27.5 million) than the previous sequels grossed in their opening weekends. Lionsgate, in their infinite wisdom, chooses not to bring back Greutert to direct the next chapter (Saw VII in 3D). No, instead they rehire David Hackl, the man responsible for Saw V, the least-liked film in the franchise (it was a better film than IV, but was slow and cheap-looking). Full Article
